Quantum Nuova for Qubit Technology

Qubits in Diamonds

A qubit is the basic unit of information in quantum computing. An advance in qubit technology is the creation of qubits using the crystal lattice defect in the diamond carbon lattice. The defect is a carbon atom being replaced with a Nitrogen atom and an adjacent vacancy. A qubit can be initialized inside of an NV center, and then the qubit state can be read out using diamond magnetometry. This is the readout technique implemented by the Quantum Nuova. Spin states can be manipulated using microwave radiation at specific frequencies, and NV centers in diamonds are notable for their long coherence times at room temperature.

Terminology

  • Qubit - quantum bit

  • NV center - Nitrogen vacancy center

  • Initialized qubit - a qubit set to a specific quantum state

  • Qubit State - the quantum state of the electrons in the qubit

  • Coherence Time - the time that a qubit remains in a specific state

Diamonds for Qubits

In order for a diamond sample to be used for the creation of qubits, the material needs to be specifically engineered and optimized. There are two parameters crucial to this process:

  • Positioning of the defects (with respect to each other)

  • Coherence Time (the time that a qubit maintains its quantum state)

Quantum Nuova for Diamond Based Qubits

The Quantum Nuova device implements a confocal microscope with diamond magnetometry. The confocal microscope can be used to locate diamonds with NV Centers in order to probe them with a green laser light and jump the NV Centers into an excited state. The fluorescence which occurs upon deexcitation is detected. The intensity of this fluorescence is indicative of the spin state of the electrons, allowing for a direct measurement of the qubits state using the Quantum Nuova.

Using the information on the position of the defects and the coherence time, the quality of the qubits can be assessed. The high-throughput stage of the device allows for an automated process on many samples. This quality assurance testing can be performed either during the engineering process or for quality control of devices in their final stage.
